Pfizersaid Tuesday it would stop selling the anti-hypertensive drug, Norvasc, in the UK, because it "has become increasingly clear that there is a risk of serious adverse events from this drug."
The company said it would also stop selling the drug for "less than two months."
The UK patent for Norvasc expires in April 2014.
The UK patent on Viagra expires in May 2014.
Norvasc is known generically as amlodipine, while Norvasc was initially developed as a blood pressure drug. It is also used for the treatment of hypertension.
Norvasc, originally launched in the UK in 1997, was first marketed in the U. S. in 2000.
However, the drug's patent expired in April 2014, and Pfizer rebranded the drug in 2016.
It is currently the only drug approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of hypertension.
"Pfizer and the FDA have clearly demonstrated that it is a safe and effective drug in the vast majority of patients who suffer from hypertension," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, the director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "The FDA has identified a high risk of serious adverse events associated with this medication. It has been identified that serious adverse events have been reported with the use of this drug."
The FDA's analysis found that a 10 percent increase in blood pressure was not statistically significant.
In the study, Norvasc had a risk of 5.1 percent.
"The risk of serious adverse events reported in patients who received Norvasc for the first time was similar to the risk associated with the use of other blood pressure drugs in patients receiving concomitant treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or beta-blockers," the agency said.
The FDA also found that patients who were taking Norvasc for hypertension had a 4 percent increased risk of developing angina.
The drug's side effects were "unusually mild," but some patients also reported that they were dizziness, headaches and "nausea," as well as a headache.
The FDA's review found that Norvasc was well tolerated and that the risk of side effects was not statistically significant.
In the study, Norvasc had a risk of 2.6 percent.
"This is the most comprehensive clinical study to date of any hypertension treatment for any indication," Wolfe said.
"There is also a small but significant risk of serious adverse events associated with Norvasc. These include very rare but potentially fatal cardiovascular events including strokes and myocardial infarctions."
Norvasc is marketed by Pfizer Inc.The drug was first approved in 1997 by the FDA to treat high blood pressure and hypertension.
The drug is also used to treat high blood pressure.
In the study, Norvasc had a risk of 2.8 percent.
Norvasc is available without a prescription in the U.
Norvasc, manufactured by Merck & Co., is the only drug approved for the treatment of hypertension.

NORVASC is a widely prescribed medication for lowering cholesterol levels. This medication contains the same active ingredient as statins, aliskiren. Statins reduce levels of LDL cholesterol, a crucial factor in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
